Nope. The LM3915 is a bar/dot display driver. Take a look at the datasheet and you will see it is a straightforward device.Do I have to program the LM3915 and the comparators (either magnitude or identity) before I use them.

That's a good point. The linear device would be a better choice.The LM3915 has a logarithmic output. You might want to use an LM3914 which has a linear output.
