I was hoping to build something similar (different coloured lights to make a pattern, but using a rechargeable 9V battery) but am a little overwhelmed by your schematic and the discussion over the types of transistors.

Can you tell me briefly just what purpose the Q1 - Q8 components serve?
Can you tell me briefly just what the CR1-CR6 components serve?
I note that you have a few capacitors, Pardon my ignorance, but someone told me they are only used in an AC circuit ?

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Thank you

I assume you are talking about this schematic...

The transistors are part of a current regulator design, the diodes are voltage references for the transistor circuits. They set the lower limit. I drew this quite a while back.

A rechargeable 9V battery can light the 40 LEDs for about 10 minutes before it needs to be re-charged. The LEDs will slowly dim during the 10 minutes as the battery charge runs down.

If you make the LEDs very dim then a 9V rechargeable battery will last longer.
