There are many LCDs out there.
Probably 99.999% of them are controlled via some type of MPU.
Some come with serial interfaces, like I2C, which reduces the number of wires you need to run to the display.
Go to mouser.com or digikey.com and search on LCD displays. You will get more info than you want.
