HP laptop, cost over $1000 with all accessories...3 1/2 yrs. old and display is dark. Should it be fixed ($475. fix est.) or buy new? New Acer w/ I5 processor now $425. How long does a laptop display usually last anyway?

You can always crack it open and check to see what went wrong and attempt to fix it...I had one that went dark after the thing simply came unplugged behind the keyboard....

 

I bought a new display for my cracked HP display for about $100 or so and fixed it myself. Pretty simple.

 

Re-furbished HP 16" laptop display on Ebay is $149 w/ free shipping...however local comp. gurus say the right solution is to go to Walmart and buy a new flat display for $129 and plug it in to the db15s side jack on the laptop. Viola! A successful (and economical) solution is found! Half of the college crowd have done this as all have dead laptop displays.
