L298 IC(h bridge) and battery (12V /7.2A)

well i m driving a motor in both directions and 4 that i have seen an ic of h bridge which has ratings 40v and 4A .there r two motors there and working as differential drive .let me know can i use this ic as its current rating is less than battery current ....?

The amp-hour rating of the battery doesn't really matter.

What DOES matter is the voltage and current rating of the motors that you wish to control using the L298.

Please provide more detail about the motors, and what you are attempting to accomplish.
