Some of the projects I have in mind also requires quite a bit of mechanical knowledge. One I am working on requires the laser to be mounted on a pole and travel up/down under wireless control.

What forums have you found helpful for discussing devices like this?
CNC and robotics stuff may not do as the motion is vertical and about 10 feet.

A number of our members here are well versed in mechanical things.
Go ahead and ask your questions and see what happens next.

A few things have to be considered.
Is the installation outside or exposed to the elements?
What accuracy do you need to keep the alignment?
Just a couple of initial questions that come to mind.

Also what is the time required to move 10 feet?
What is the weight of the load?
What is the resolution of your steps, i.e. what is the smallest step size you need to position the laser?
What is the accuracy of your steps, i.e. the position of your laser has to be accurate to how many mm or inches?
