Intermittent level switch failures

We are using ultrasonic solid state point level switches 24vdc and are experiencing intermittent failures. Each switch is 24vdc powered with a normally open or closed relay output. We have added a second dc power supply to power the relay contacts only and this has seemed to solve the issue but don't know why they were failing or why the second power supply seems to help. Anyone ever experience a similar situation?

seperating the suplies cured the problem, then the problem was inductive spikes when the relays were cycled probably. surge protection across the relay coil would have fixed it.

The relay output is solid state and internal to the level switch. The switch is an omega lvsw-701.
