How are commerical and military integrated circuits designated in the devices' serial numbers?

The last time I checked, individual chips don't have serial numbers.

I have never seen serial numbers appear on IC. Batch number and date codes may be. Did you actually mean part numbers?

Having had time to think for a while, I would guess that large microprocessors probably have serial numbers. Not the old 8080's but the modern Pentium chips and AMD brains for personal computers. In general, IC's are made with a photoetching process and nobody stops to laser engrave individual serial numbers on 10 cent chips that are going out the door in thousands per day.
