Infrared proximity sensor

Hello,

I want to detect the position of a foot on a single step for one of my projects.

I was thinking of designing an infrared proximity sensor. I have seen that the GP2Y0A21YK could make it.

However, I was thinking of a cheeper solution with one iRed LED and a phototransistor.
I have seen many project on the web using the IS471F. However, these ones were used only at short distance, max 10cm.

Do you think I can use the IS471F to detect foot on a step, i.e. distance of detection max 70cm?

Thank you

Yes.

Well it should work. There is no reason why it wouldn't if you have the receiver sensitivity set correctly. Try placing the IR LED and the Photo transistor inside a couple of tubes about 5CMs long, that way it will avoid false triggering. Only problem would be aligning the tubes.

I don't know about these particular components but 70cm should be easy to achieve. Example: you TV remote works over a distance of several metres!
