Ignition coils- Low reference circuit.

In some ignition systems the PCM supplies a low reference circuit in the ignition coils themselves? What is function of that particular circuit ??

I don't have my GM software on this particular PC but I'll bet Jaguarjoe is correct.

Please elaborate on the make/model/year of the car.
