When system A is required to be electrically isolated from system B but still needs to communicate via the I2C interface the I2C interface itself also needs to be electrically isolated in order for electrically isolation to exist.

Johann points to one series of devices that can do this.

Yes, for I2C you would need a bidirectional isolator such as one of these.
