Read Volume lll - Semiconductors on the Forum ebooks.

    1. A first step is to decide/define what you want the 'transistor stage' to do.
    2. You also need to study and understand the 'transistor stage' important parameters, specifically those important to #1 above, and specify the 'transistor stage' operating point to best achieve #1 above.
    3. Use your slide rule and the appropriate formulas in a book or perhaps a reference such as Volume lll - Semiconductors on the Forum ebooks mentioned by tnk to determine bias appropriate to achieve required gain, frequency response, power dissipation, stability, harmonic content, wind speed etc.
    4. built and test the circuit to verify whether desired characteristics were achieved.
    5. Make design adjustments
    6 repeat 2-5 until 1 is achieved.

Note - step 2 is left to the OPer as an exercise.

And it does NOT take a genius just some willing to learn.
