There is a much easier ways to make a similar motor using a battery, battery holder, about six inches of bare copper wire, several feet of magnet wire, and a refrigerator magnet. An even easier motor, a homopolar motor, can be made with an AA battery, a round neodymium magnet of the same diameter as the battery, and about four inches of bare copper wire.

Like this:

The trick is to scrape the insulation from one side of the magnet wire to create a commutator at the support posts. It needs to be spun to get it started.
