Sometimes it helps to "see" what you can do. Tracecom and I worked on a project using a PICAXE for someone here not too long ago. Look at post 108 which includes and excellent video Tracecom did showing the operation here.
That project might help give you a better idea of what goes into a project as well as showing you what a PICAXE (any uC really) can do. Take a look at post 101 and 112 for schematic, parts list, code, etc.
