How is one meant to connect a wire to a potentiometer? I have this pot and it has these loops at the end of the lead, like this:

You need to solder those connections. I also recommend using some heat shrink to cover the terminals after they are soldered.

Normally we solder wires directly to those lead.

 

1. Select shrink tube large enough to easily fit over the completed connection.
2. Strip and tin the wires and trim to length.
3. Place pre-cut shrink tube pieces on wires taped in place at least 2" from wire tips.
4. To prevent excess solder wicking into wire and melting insulation, clip a small heat sink on the tinned wire next to the insulation.
5. Prepare terminal and solder wire into terminal as shown in the below video from 2:54-3:12. Looping (hooking) the wire ends is not necessary for most applications.
6. Clean flux from joints with alcohol.
7. Shrink tubing in place.
