A chaser (ring counter) is a repeating sequencer usually made by combining a clock with a counter. The clock can be any of several types including discrete component astable multivibrator, inverter, logic gate or dedicated timer IC such as a 555. The counter can be any of several types including 4-bit, 8-bit, decade or shift registers, depending on the number of outputs needed and other features.

A sequencer can be built with discrete components depending on capacitor charge times and transistor biasing for operation and of course a microprocessor can be programmed to perform the function.
