If you're using a digital controller for an AC power source, I bet there is a triac in there.
Dimming a DC power source might be done with pulse width modulation.
I suspect that the digital part might only be the display in some cases.
That's because I do not understand some parts of the question.
Perhaps you are referring to a retail product for lighting control?
