I think there comes a point where it's better to go for the quick and simple design rather than fool around with complications. I'm suggesting you get matched positive and negative power supplies and connect them with a common ground, then just switch on whichever one you need. How much is another 12V supply going to cost? Not much.

Note that "positive" and "negative" supplies may well be the same item, if the outputs float.
Yeah a couple non-regulated power supplies would work that way. For 12V and 5A, it is not a problem, but for the bigger cells we will need 100A, 600A and a future cell will take in the neighborhood of 8000A. So the power supply cost is an issue.

We did explore using a single 24V transformer with a center tap and we have not thrown away the possibility but since cost is of major importance, we need to explore design possibilities before making a final decision.
