i'm using L293d(datasheet attached)motor controller for one of my projects.i give input from a 74164 to pin7 of L293d.i gave 5v to both pin8 and pin16 to activate the IC and control motor.i grounded both 4 and 5.i gave the potential from the same set of batteries(5v).to the 74164 and l292d.the circuit worked, but i wanted to give 12V to the pin8.
so i gave +ve terminal of 12v battery to pin8 of L293d.but i dont know where to connect the -ve of the cell.

please help,thank you.

You were correct in applying the 12v to pin 8. This is the motor supply pin.

Note that if your 12v battery is a heavy-duty unit, you should use a fuse between the + terminal and the Vs terminal. I suggest using a 1A slow blow fuse. If the fuse is rated for much more than 1A and you have an error in wiring, you will burn up the L293D instead of the fuse.

Connect your cell's negative terminal to GND; ie: pins 4, 5, 12, 13.
