Goodday. I have been assigned the task of observing the modulated signal of a PLC modem, yet I haven’t been able to get started. I would like to request the board for assistance.
What are good methods to go about this task? Should I use an Oscilloscope or Spectrum Analyzer? If so, Must there be a circuit between the measuring instrument and the power outlet where the PLC modem is connected, or is there a way to connect directly?

I would start by reading the relevant standards.

Google has plenty try: "Homeplug standards"

Then you will need an rj45 breakout box to make your connections.

A scope will show the the signal itself.
A spectrum analyser will show the quality of the signal.
