I have been trying to find a design (circuit) for a gauge for measuring of paint (or other coatings) thickness, but without any luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Senior Member, but I have spent quite some time on Google and only found a couple of old valve (or tubes as you rebellious colonials call them) designs. Not really a helpful response; the kind of thing that brings the forum in to disrepute.

If you want to build something you can easily buy instead, it helps to explain why. What's lacking in the commercial units? If it's just for the fun of building it, fine. Maybe you hope to save money, or maybe your needs aren't addressed by the commercial units. A circuit design is affected by the goals.
