Here is a project I never finished. The robotic combat club basically folded up while I was working on it, the part you are interested in is sheet 3.
The basic counter was tested on a breadboard. You will note two RC circuits with different time constants, this was to feed pulses in a controlled sequence to make it load the presets the way I wanted them to.
