I never throw away an old floppy drive. I use the stepper motor for robotics motion control.

Nixie tubes were thought to be an obsolete display technology that at best had morphed into vacuum fluorescent displays, but now there's a big resurgence of interest in using them for hobby and aesthetic projects. Cold war Russian surplus seems to be one of the primary sources. I'm not sure if that's the kind of example you need but there it is.
