What is the power consumption of a HD44780 16x2 LCD powered normally at 5V ?

Maybe average.. I know it will vary from when it is just displaying to when it receives data.

The best thing will be to check with the datasheet. For that 16x2 display.

Yes, but I only managed to find the HD44780U datasheet which is the low voltage model. I am using the 5V model.

If you tell us which 16x2 display you are using. We may be able to help you out. Else it is hard to give any accurate answers. I did some research in my datasheet collection and found results around 3 mA. stated in the datasheet as max at 5 volt supply

    1 to 2mA is typical for a 16x2 display.
