I'm a beginner in electronics so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that to my understanding a PUT would work easier.
I believe you are mistaken. However, if you can name the part number and show how to connect it, I am willing to learn from you.

If you can show where the original poster can buy the transistor, that would be even better.

I have spent time searching at Maplins, and cussed them thoroughly.
eBay, from where I am, is going to give me answers all over the planet, instead of UK.

I am going to have to ask that someone in UK or Leecavturbo search eBay for a logic level, n-channel mosfet that can do about 20 volts and .2 amps, minimum.

Another option would be an NPN Darlington transistor, like a TIP120. It will plug into the circuit with no modifications. That is way overkill, but lacking a search engine on the right continent is stopping me.:mad:

ps, I used a dual comparator because that is what was available at Maplins.
