In a galvanometer, a current passes through a coil.It produces a couple and coil rotates. How does it comes to rest? I mean when do the force stops to act on the coil? When do the restoring torque comes into play, and becomes equal to that of deflecting couple?

In addition to the link cited by beenthere, you may want to take a look at the explanation of meters provided in the AAC ebook.
