    Hi , i have a project of " Fire Fighting Robot "

and i'm having a problem in the proximity sensor that i want to use many IR sensors instead of using ultasonic ( very expensive ) but the maze area will be affected by :
    - The light level of the surrounding in the testing area
    - The room will be lit by overhead high pressure sodium vapour lights.

so how can i overcome the effect of these things

Use IR emitters and an IR (dark red) filter at the sensor to reduce the effect of ambient room light.

Use AC modulation and detection of the signal. (38KHz modules are commonly available for this purpose). Since room light is steady (or fluctuates at twice the mains frequency) this will also minimize the effect of ambient light.
