In Microsoft Word, go Menu->Insert->Object (create new tab) and select "Microsoft Equation 3.0". If it is installed!!

In Open Office Writer, Menu->Insert->Object->Formula.

Open Office is not only better, it free! If you have to present your work as a .doc - no problem. Open Office can save to (creates) Word docs.

I agree with JDT, I always used the built in equation editor in Word which was also recommended by our professor during our Circuits I course.
