    Why the odd font?

Depends, a balanced mixer is an RF device, and can be used to mix and beat two frequencies together. It generally doesn't allow the two original frequencies through.

A mixer can be a device to merge two signals together, typically audio. It can also refer to a crude device that heterodynes two frequencies together, similar to the first device but without the rejection of the original frequencies.
