For a DIY one, look at either 'Cats Whisker detector' diode or 'Metal Rectifier'.

A Gillette Blue Blade razor and a #2 pencil lead. (Alas, Gillette Blue Blades are no longer available. They made the BEST cat's whisker detectors!)

What a lot of folks don't realize is that the Cat's whisker is actually a HOT CARRIER diode! That's why they were so sensitive!

Electron tube or Semiconductor ?

 

I built one when I was a young'n. It's the oxides that's formed on the blade that creates a semiconductor junction with the pencil point. I don't remember which terminal is the cathode though.
