Do I need diodes on L293DNE?

Hi.

I'm making a bi-polar step motor driver with the L293DNE Quadrouple Half-H driver. On my IC the marking is L293DNE.

In the datasheet, page 10, it is a schematic over a Bi-polar stepmotor driver. With 8 diodes. I was thinking of using that schematic. However... On page 2, it is a note stating:"Output diodes are internal in L293D"

Does that mean I do not need them?

Using the external diodes, because the current of inside diodes is too less, and you can see the note as Output Clamp Diodes for Inductive Transient Suppression (L293D) that it was shown in the datasheet on the first page.

If you look closely at the wiring of the diodes you will see that you can use a bridge rectifier instead of 4 individual diodes. :D
