    Colleagues,

Are there programmable tone generator ICs out there? It would have a digital interface to a microcontroller (e.g. I2C). Through this interface the controller could set a tone and volume. The output would go to a fixed-gain audio amp and then to a speaker, or may be the tone generator IC would have an amplifier on board.

The closes thing I was able to find is this: http://www.keterex.com/pubs/kx1400ds.pdf . The tone generator is a part of an audio playback chip. May be there are other audio codec type chips that have tone generators and volume control…

Any suggestion (aside from obvious) or insight is appreciated!

You can generate tones right from a micro-controller.

How about using a microcontroller to output a PWM signal that you would feed into a modified Class-D amplifier. The PWM signal from the microcontroller would replace the signal normally derived from a comparator that is fed by a ramp signal and an audio signal.

How many tones are required? The musical scale can be produced by a top-octave generator & a hand full of 4066 IC's. Of course ,can use the 4066's to control timing resistors of a 555 to give a triangle, or square wawe output, 4 tones per 4066.

I knew I had that chip somewhere, Mostek MK50240, 13 dividers giving C to C. Was lost among other relics, RK61, SYLV. 6909,AY-3-1350 alas no data sheet on this one.
