What is the difference between lm317 and 7805?

 

They have different data sheets. You should read them.

 

The LM317 is much more versatile than the 7805. As wayneh said, read the data sheet.

 

The 317 is adjustable, the 7805 is fairly fixed (but can be tricked out).

hope i no step on anyones toes and get scrubbed off the chrissy card list

lm317 - adjustable positive voltage regulator 1.2 ~ 35v(?) and can happily supply that at an amp and a bit with a heatsink attached

7805 - fixed positive 5 volt regulator about the same amperage as the lm317
