How is the DIAC used besides allowing for bidirectional current and whats the purpose behind the waveform it generates ?

Is it more for switching circuits like light dimmers , or speed control , such as you would find in motors. I was doing some reading on TRIACS and both seem the same except that TRIACS have the advantage of the gates for conduction. Why would you want to have a device that required more work for conduction than one that only required the use of a gate ?

You wouldn't. ;) But understanding the diac leads to a better understanding of the triac.
