how can I determine if a machine is a balanced 3 phase load? Is it indicated on a nameplate on the machine?

Name plate will indicate maximum running load and is usually engineered to be balanced. The machine may not be balanced depending on the electrical equipment intalled (like single phase heaters). the only way to be sure is to mesure the current on each phase.

What loads are you referring too?

Usually 3 phase loads are balanced as to cause an even current distribution in all the 3 phases.
