I had hoped that would have been fairly obvious.

You asked what makes working complex exponentials, when working with signals and systems, so special. I said that they are used because they make the math much easier. Your instructor said the same thing. Now I'm trying to demonstrate that to you. Since the very concept of "easier" is relative, you need to be able to compare two things. So I am asking you to reduce an expression of the type that you often encounter when working with signals and systems two ways -- with and without using complex exponentials -- so that you can see which way is "easier".

The fact that you are having such a hard time combining two sinusoidal signals into one should make you very interested in learning if there is an easier way.
