Been a while since you changed a starter motor? Since some time in the 1980s, they went to PM motors.
Maybe on small engines but have yet to ever find a PM type starter motor on any modern vehicle and I have changed more than I care to admit too.

As far as free wheeling them I would not worry about it so much. I have deliberately tried to grenade a few of them by putting them on 24 volt battery sets and letting them rip and have yet to ever get one to go to bits. :(

They scream like a nitro fueled vacuum cleaner but still never got one to fly apart. :D

I'm thinking hydraulics will be a topic here shortly
It is one of the most practical and cost effective ways to make large amounts of linear force from a small power input.

Unfortunately it looks like the OP may be long gone already. :(
