I am looking to experiment with RS485. I have a raspberry pi and have ordered a usb to rs485 adaptor. I want to buy some cheap device that supports rs485 (e.g. a small motor) that I can send rs485 commands to from the pi and see it in action. Can you suggest what I can buy ( < $30).

If there are no such ready made devices, is it possible to make one using a small number of components?

Have you look at a MAX485 device or similar?

You do not need USB to RS-485 converter.
