Cascading Linear Regulators

    Are there any advantages/disadvantages to cascading linear regulators as shown in the attached schematic?

    IC2 is protected from input O/V. IC2 has lower dissipation, and depending on loading the total disspation may be more evenly spread across the two regulator packages. +5V is most likely better regulated from hum/noise.

    An advantage might be that if the 12V one shuts down because of overcurrent or temperature it also shuts down the 5V.
