I have a orange drop 600V rated capacitor and .1 uF So in the schamatic it shows as being connected to three sockets and the 115 V AC line, and the wire from the relay to the capacitor.. well I powered up the circuit and got no sound and in 10 seconds later I had some smoke released, given the damage it looks like it was the capacitor.. What I don't get is what is the cause of it burning up?

Could be 'natural' failure, probably hard to tell at this point what caused it.
Usually the orange drop are pretty good, did someone replace an original wax paper type, I wonder which are usually inferior?
That an oldie with Selenium rectifiers!

Are you sure that W.W. resistor was not pressed against it?
    Max.

Yes, the brownish wire wound resistor looks nasty.

EDIT: Do you have an organ to go with this Leslie speaker?

That's how Orange Drops pop! They blow a chunk out through the casing. I even have one that popped, brand new! Why? Because it was defective. That's all. Some parts are born bad, some go bad, some go to the landfill still perfectly good.

Of course, the next question along this line is, "Why did it fail today?"
    Because it was defective.

I'm almost sure nothing was touching

    Yes it's connected to a Hammond C3

When I first turned it on the motors came on like normal but I had no sound, then I saw a little glow from that cap then came the smoke. So if this is how they pop how did the older stuff let go?
