I am completely new to using an oscilloscope. I just bought an old tektronix
T935. When going through the manual for setup I came to the part for compensating the probe and I am not able to fully compensate. In fact even if I turn the adjustment screw all the way it will not ever over compensate. The probe is an HP 10:1 10M ohm/15pf -1Mohm 9-17pF input. Is this a matter of an incompatible probe, a faulty probe, a faulty oscilloscope or a nit wit operator?

The manual for the T935 says the input capacitance is 30pF. If your probe will only compensate up to 17pF, that is your problem. You need a different probe.
