I'm having trouble understand exactly how to use flip flops, what they are doing, and how to implement them in a practical application. I understand combinational logic, boolean algebra, etc. I just want a very basic explanation of what a flip flop does, for example a D flip flop vs a JK flip flop.

Does volume IV chapter 10 of the All About Circuits ebook help?

well, j/k flip flops are used in things like shift counters... when J and K are high it toggles back and forth between high and low. i worked with them alot on the ships clocks :) you chain them togoether, every time it goes from high to low, the next counter goes up by one.. and so on and so forth

D flip flips are more for data memory.. stores whatever is on D.. it is usaully used with a clock or enable..in this case, it only remembers the D input if the clock or enable is enabled...
