My Blackberry 9900 stopped charging and could not be detected by the computer when conneted to it after a power surge when using a sumsung charger with it.

I got the following images on USB ways for the blackberry bold 9900 from the GSM forum and other sites...

I got a few quetions though...

1. How do u remove the little metal casing covering this part of the circuit board?
2. How can u test which component is of fault without damaging the circuit board?
3. which component might likely be of fault?

Your help will be greatly appreciated...

First measure battery voltage. If it is 3,7V and more, phone should start up. If not, you have bigger problem, then charging.
That metal casing is best to remove with hot air station.

Those might be two different things. I mean, have you tried any other source of USB power besides your computer? The power lines are the outer 2 pins on the USB jack while the data pins are the two inner pins. Something to do with the data lines could be fried, preventing a handshake with the computer, while still allowing power to flow on the other pins.

Wayneh, very intresting point u have raised. yes i have tried other sources of usb besides my computer and it wont charge...it only shows the charging symbol on the screen for a split second then it vanishes...and thats it, it wont just charge nor be detected by the computer...so if its a fried component i was thinking it has to do with both the power and data lines...

Very interesting that you briefly get the symbol. That suggests to me that it sees the power but disconnects when it cannot negotiate higher current charging that it wants. A USB device is supposed to avoid high current unless the host allows it.

Is it possible that it is actually charging at a low rate, even though there is no on-screen indication? I believe you'll need to put an ammeter in series with the power to determine that. Do NOT put the probes across (parallel to) the power - that will short it. If you don't understand this warning, just connect the blackberry normally and wait a while, then check your battery percentage with software, to see if maybe it is slowly charging.
