At least you learnt the pro and con of using discrete logic chips and mcu. Plus some solutions might be feasible, but cannot get the materials to do it. We have to compromise things and see what is available and easy to get on hand.
Anyway, others might be benefited from this thread if they have the same requirement as yours.
