The latest version of AVG seems to have lessened it's system impact.
Also, if you suspect an infection, I recommend SuperAntiSpyware. There is a free version available from CNET.

Virus protection is real. That is NOT to say that some scams aren't pretending to be virus protection. Beware of any popup from a web site that says your system is infected. I automatically use task manager to close such windows. To be safe, I then close all browser windows from TM.

It's like those fake calls from Microsoft. They play on your fears to infect your system.

Be familiar with your virus protection to prevent getting caught in such a scam.

If by "professional" you mean for "corporate use" or "business desktops" then its a no-brainer.
The answer is "Symantec Endpoint Protection".
