Is there anything complicated about testing the battery charger for my drill? I put the leads of the meter on two of the three contacts - and set on amps. Is this the right approach? I got a few milliamps. Is the third contact a ground? Does the charger need to be under a load or anything like that? I didn't look to see what the output is supposed to be because I wasn't sure if I was doing it right at all.

You should never measure the current of a power source. Your meter or the power source might blow up.

You can measure the current of the power source that is in series with your current meter and the load.

The 3rd wire might be a temperature probe in the battery. Then it turns the charging on and off.
