basic ethernet question

Hey, so I'm building a simple ethernet connected device, and I had a couple questions: first, if this thing doesn't need to broadcast over the web (it's just supposed to talk to one computer through a router), do I need to assign it a MAC address? Second, what is the easiest way to communicate with it, TCP/IP? I'm going to be using the PIC18F87J60 to be doing this. Thoughts?
