Could someone please point me to a battery switchover circuit
or recommend A switchover IC. I need it for a counter circuit
using 5.5v. I need to be able to keep my count if power supply fails.

You can read the following web page> I think the circuit is a simple and cheaper one. If you want to use non- rechargable battery, just eliminate the charge branch of the circuit (D5, R3)
