    No, diodes will not work.
You don't need zeners anyway. You can omit D1 and D2.

    PB3(MOSI/OC2) of atmega8 with MOSI OF ATMEGA16
    PB4(MISO) of atmega8 with MISO OF ATMEGA16
    PB2(SS/OC1B) of atmega8 with RESET of atmega16
    PC6(/RESET) of atmega8 with RESET of atmega16
    PB5(SCK) of atmega8 with SCK of atmega16

    PB2(SS/OC1B) of atmega8 with SS PB4 of atmega16
    PB3(MOSI/OC2) of atmega8 with MOSI PB5 OF ATMEGA16
    PB4(MISO) of atmega8 with MISO PB6 OF ATMEGA16
    PB5(SCK) of atmega8 with SCK PB7 of atmega16

Don't forget a common ground between the programmer and the device being programmed.

You shouldn't need SS pin hooked up on the target. It may be using SS on the host to drive RESET on the target. The programmer I use just has MISO, MOSI, SCK, RESET, VCC, GND. SS is needed for SPI in slave mode but programming is a special mode.

MOSI and MISO must be crossed.

Connect MOSI of ATmega16 to MISO of Atmega8
and MISO of ATmega16 to MOSI of Atmega8
    (I think).
