Why even bother with Arduino? Just get an Atmel AVR chip and start programming.

What are you trying to accomplish?

 

I have recently used an Uno for development of code and interface electronics, and then migrated the project to one of these to finalize it (make it permanent). Code and interface transfer seamlessly...

I have used the $8 Chinese clone of the Uno, too...

Don't you need a crystal, capacitors, programmer device?

 

Like MikeML, I tend to develop on an Arduino and then just blow the final code on to an Atmega 328 for embedding in the finished project. You can use the Arduino as a programmer for the bare chip.
